Fence cost calculator
Fences get quoted by the foot, which makes two quotes for the same yard look comparable when they are not. This builds the total from the parts instead — and then prints the per-foot figure at the bottom, where it belongs, as an output.
That is $37 per foot — an output of these choices, not an input. Prices move weekly and by region. Enter the unit price your yard quoted you — the defaults are round placeholders, not a market average.
Watch what spacing does
Change the post spacing and nothing else, and the total moves — because the post, its hole and its concrete are a fixed cost per bay, and wider bays spread that cost over more fence. It is the single easiest lever on the whole number.
It is also the one with a real limit. Wider bays mean longer rail spans and more sag, and more wind load on each post. Set the spacing for the fence you want to still be straight in five years, then read the price — not the other way round.
Picket coverage is where quantities go wrong
Pickets are counted on coverage — the picket's real face width plus whatever gap you are leaving. A privacy fence with boards butted tight uses the full face width; a spaced picket fence at a two-inch gap uses far fewer boards over the same run.
Get that one field right and the picket line is accurate. Get it wrong and it is the biggest quantity error in the estimate, because pickets are the highest-count item on the fence.

One structural note: gates are priced here as a single line each because they are a different job from fence — heavier posts, deeper holes, a braced frame and hardware. Price a double drive gate as more than two singles.
