The last board is where a deck gives itself away. Run the numbers before you fix the first one and you find out now whether you finish on a full board, a sensible rip, or a three-quarter-inch sliver — and what gap adjustment fixes it.
A rip narrower than about half a board reads badly at the edge. Adjust the gap slightly, or plan a wider fascia or picture-frame board to absorb it.
Why the gap is not just drainage
The gap exists to let water and debris through and to give the boards room to move. It is also the one adjustable dimension in the whole layout, and that makes it the tool for landing the last board where you want it.
The leverage is real. Change the gap by a sixteenth of an inch across twenty-five boards and the far edge moves more than an inch and a half. A gap change nobody will ever see turns an awkward sliver into a full board.
The limits: too tight and debris packs the gap and the boards have nowhere to swell; too wide and heels and chair legs find it. Composite boards have their own specified gap that is not adjustable — it is a thermal expansion requirement, not a preference.
Three ways to fix an awkward last board
- 01Adjust the gap. Free, invisible, and usually enough. The tool gives you the exact gap that lands the run on a whole board.
- 02Add a picture frame. A border board around the perimeter absorbs the difference and looks deliberate. It also needs blocking under the mitres, so decide before you frame.
- 03Split the rip between both edges. Instead of one 1-inch sliver at the far side, take half an inch off the first board and half off the last. Symmetrical reads as intentional; one sliver reads as a mistake.
Fixing the gap on site
Do not eyeball it and do not trust a nail as a spacer twenty-five times. Cut a handful of spacer blocks to the exact gap and use them at every joist as each board goes down.
Check the accumulated position against a chalk line every four or five boards. Small errors are invisible individually and obvious by the far side, and catching drift early costs one board rather than the whole run.
Then plan where the joints land — the joist count in the result is your list of legal joint positions, and staggering is the next decision.
